The Story

The first ever recorded meaning of 143, the shorthand for ‘I Love You’ dates back to the early 1900s from Minot’s Ledge lighthouse off the coast of Cohasset, MA. Upon recommendation from the Coast Guard, the lighthouse was randomly assigned a flash pattern in the order of one quick flash, four flashes, and then three flashes. Soon after, it was equated with the phrase I (1), love (4), you (3).
